High tea food poisoning outbreak

Victoria’s health department has confirmed 17 cases of salmonella linked to a high tea held at The Langham hotel in Melbourne. The high tea events were held on July 11 and 12, with around half the guests falling ill after eating there.  Seven people have since been hospitalised suffering severe food poisoning.

According the Department of Health, in early 2014 The Langham failed multiple city council food safety inspections and were fined, but these incidents have not been connected to the recent cases of salmonella. A spokesman for the health department said the results from the hotel’s food samples are still days away. These results will indicate which food products were the cause of the outbreak.

It is important to remember the 10 rules of food safety:

  1. Always wash and dry your hands thoroughly during food preparation
  2. Store food at correct temperatures
  3. Check that food has been cooked properly and all the way through
  4. If in doubt throw it out
  5. Be sure to separate raw and cooked foods
  6. Remember that different utensils must be used for raw and ready-to-eat foods
  7. Monitor your fridge and freezer temperatures
  8. Salads, spreads, dips and other perishable products should be kept cool or refrigerated until needed
  9. Rinse all fruit and veggies in clean water
  10. Always keep your utensils, cutting boards and containers clean and dry
