What is the Depo-Provera Class Action Investigation about?

Frequently Asked Questions

What are meningioma tumours?

Meningiomas are intracranial tumours that develop in the membranes (known as meninges) surrounding the brain. They can also develop in the layers of membranes that cover the spinal cord. They are typically benign but when they grow, the brain and other structures in the skull can be adversely impacted – with serious and potentially lethal consequences.

What are the common symptoms of meningioma?

Meningioma symptoms can develop gradually and may not be immediately noticeable.

Common signs include:

  • Headaches (particularly in the morning)

  • Changes in vision (blurring or double vision)

  • Hearing loss or tinnitus (ringing in ears)

  • Memory problems

  • Loss of smell

  • Seizures

  • Weakness in arms or legs

  • Speech difficulties

Shine Lawyers cannot provide you with medical advice, and if you have concerns about your individual circumstances, please discuss them with your doctor.

Is Depo-Provera still on the market?

Yes. Depo-Provera is still in market and has been available since 1992. For more information, read this recent Guardian Article on Hormone Medication and Brain Tumour Risk.

What if I used Depo-Provera during the relevant period but have not been diagnosed with meningioma?

To be a group member in the Depo-Provera class action, it is essential that you have been diagnosed with meningioma and have had a period of use of Depo-Provera.

What if I have another type of tumour?

Shine is only investigating the potential connection between Depo-Provera or Depo-Ralovera and the development of meningioma tumours. While we understand there are other types of tumours, Shine believes that the current scientific evidence is strongest in relation to this potential connection.

What if I used Depo-Provera prior to 2 August 1991?

We understand Depo-Provera was available in Australia for limited use from the 1960s. However, to be a group member in the Depo-Provera class action, you must have had at least one year of use (or four injections) after 2 August 1991. If all your use occurred prior to this date, you will not meet the group member definition. If you are unsure of your exact dates of use, we encourage you to register your interest with approximate dates. At a later stage, we may be able to obtain your prescription records to confirm your usage.

What if I used Depo-Provera in a different country?

To be a group member in the Depo-Provera class action, at least four injections must have been administered in Australia. If all your use occurred outside Australia, you will not be eligible to be part of the Australian proceedings. You may wish to seek advice from a solicitor in the country where you used Depo-Provera about any potential claim you may have in that jurisdiction.

What if I am not sure exactly how much Depo-Provera I was administered with or the dates they were given?

If you are unsure of your exact dates or amount of use, we encourage you to register your interest with approximate dates and duration of use to the best of your recollection. At a later stage, we may be able to obtain your prescription records to confirm your usage.
