What is paraquat?

Paraquat is the trade name for N,N-dimethyl-4,4-bipyridinium dichloride. It’s a chemical that’s been used in multiple Australian herbicide products. Paraquat was first manufactured in 1962 and is now banned in over 70 countries worldwide due to it’s associated health affect.

Which Australian products have paraquat in them?

Australian named products with paraquat in them include, but are not limited to: 

  • Gramoxone: A widely recognised paraquat-based herbicide used for non-selective weed control. 

  • Spray.Seed: A combination herbicide containing paraquat and diquat, commonly used for pre-planting weed management. 

  • Reclaim: A paraquat-based product designed for controlling a broad spectrum of weeds. 

  • Revolver: Another herbicide formulation that includes paraquat, utilized in various cropping systems. 

  • Paraquat 250 SL: A generic formulation indicating a concentration of 250 grams per litre of paraquat. 

How do I know if I have been exposed to paraquat?

You may have been exposed to paraquat if you have: 

  • Worked as a certified applicator. 

  • Worked on a farm under a certified applicator.

  • Worked on a farm and suspect that Paraquat was used, but have no means to prove it.  

  • Lived or worked near farming operations.

What crops is paraquat used on? 

The crops paraquat are typically used on include, but are not limited to: 

  • Broad acre farming  

  • Wheat  

  • Oil seed  

  • Pulses  

  • Grape production  

  • Fruit production  

  • Cane production.
