Kate was a bubbly and outgoing young girl until a serious car accident changed the course of her life.
Kate’s personality has always shone with warmth and enthusiasm. She is the bubbly one, the curious one, a social butterfly and a natural leader. During university, she worked part time at a restaurant and her skills and energy saw her quickly promoted to area manager where she led and nurtured a team of junior staff. Kate enjoyed her studies in business and event management but it was her hobbies that brought her the most joy. Whether it was water skiing, bungee jumping, snow skiing or managing her 400-strong Justin Bieber fan group, Kate was the try-anything, going-places type of girl.
In 2013, Kate and two friends hit the open road, headed for a weekend away. Kate was sitting in the backseat when the driver attempted to overtake the vehicle in front. After misjudging the timing, the driver had to veer suddenly to the right to avoid a collision with an oncoming vehicle. Their car careered through the roadside barrier and into a tree.
Kate was left with serious injuries, including spine, rib and shoulder fractures and liver and kidney damage. She was airlifted to hospital and remained an inpatient for four weeks. Following her injury, Kate was forced to wear a back brace and for close to a year after the incident, she had to return to hospital weekly for treatment and monitoring.
And as though the physical pain was not enough, the accident saw Kate miss out on an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet her hero – Justin Bieber – during his 2013 Australian tour.
For close to two years after the accident, Kate’s life was put on hold. She was left incapacitated and suffered reoccurring nightmares of the crash and the searing pain that followed. Kate struggled to sit for long periods which made studying very difficult and in the end, there was no other choice but to defer. Many of her beloved hobbies were suddenly off limits and at times, Kate felt like she had become a shadow of her former self.
The transport accident scheme in Kate’s state meant that she was entitled to access a range of benefits to help her in her recovery. But unsure where to begin or how to navigate the legal process alone, Kate reached out to Shine for assistance. Kate says her team worked hard to ensure she received all that she was entitled to and were able to secure the compensation she needed to rebuild and get her life back on track.
Four years on, Kate says she finally feels like her old self again. And while she is thankful to Shine and an expert team of doctors for helping her to get back on her feet, she said it was a kiss on the cheek from Justin Bieber that made all the dark times melt away. With her dedicated ‘Beliebers’ campaigning behind her, the Canadian artist became aware of Kate’s plight and chauffeured her to a private concert where he serenaded her in what Kate says was an “impossible dream” come true.
