The United Nations World Wildlife Day is taking place for the first time on March 3 this year.
It’s a timely reminder to raise awareness of the importance of protecting and maintaining the world’s wildlife for future generations, as well as recognising the important contribution that wildlife plays in the world including ecological, economic, scientific, educational, cultural, sustainable development and human health and well-being.
“There are steps individuals, communities and organisations can take every day to ensure our environment is protected to avoid environmental disasters in the future,” said Rebecca Jancauskas head of Shine Lawyers Environmental Law Team.
“Wrongdoings against the environment have wide ranging and devastating consequences, whether that be environmental, social, economic or a combination of all three.
“Unfortunately sometimes companies, industry and individuals do cut corners, which can lead to environmental pollutants causing harm to individuals, communities and property. If you believe this has happened to you, it’s vitally important to keep documentary evidence from the beginning, “Ms Jancauskas said.
Shine ambassador and world renowned environmental crusader Erin Brockovich visited Australia in February. During her visit, Erin spent time at The Veggie Village on the Sunshine Coast, where the community is doing their part to help the environment and Dalby in Queensland where she heard the environmental concerns of landholders in the area.
Erin and Shine’s Environmental Law team know the importance of working collectively as a community to discourage environmental crimes, but there are three things you can do as an individual if you believe your environment, whether that be your health, property or community is at harm.`
Here are our tips for keeping documentary evidence:
1. Take photos and video
2. Keep a diary
3. If your health is suffering, report all health impacts to your doctor so they are on record.
