This week is National Farm Safety Week which aims to raise awareness of farm safety issues across Australia. This year the theme is “Safe Farm = Better Productivity”. National Farm Safety Week is run by Farmsafe Australia members who are united in efforts to reduce possible problems that may occur on farms.
This year’s theme highlights the importance of business and industry working together to achieve the Farmsafe mission / vision statement of increasing the well-being of Australian farmers by improving attention to health and safety.
In 2007/08 there were 4,260 workers compensation claims in agriculture and horticulture industries in Australia. For workers in services to agriculture such as shearers and other contract workers, there were a further 830 claims per year. Claims rates in this industry are amongst the highest of any industry in Australia.
In order to decrease claims and problems like these and raise awareness for this industry, National Farm Safety week was implemented. This week has been running successfully for the past 17 years and has provided Farmsafe Australia with an opportunity to address farm safety with a national focus.
