NSW regional health inquiry extends deadline for public submissions

The parliamentary inquiry into healthcare in regional New South Wales has extended its deadline for public submissions until January 15, 2021.

The extension comes following extensive coverage of poor health outcomes in the region.

Medical Law Practice Leader Clare Eves welcomes the extension, with Shine Lawyers having made a submission to the enquiry.

“There’s a huge problem, it needs to acknowledged, we need to look into it and we need to have some rectification of it, we can’t keep carrying on the way we are,” says Clare.

Shine Lawyers has represented several families affected by medical negligence, with lives lost in the worst cases.

“We represented a family a number of years ago whose mother presented to Dubbo Base Hospital complaining of right elbow pain after being referred by her GP with a letter querying septic arthritis and requesting urgent treatment.

“Despite the referral and initial tests strongly indicating infection, a diagnosis was not made and she was not administered appropriate treatment. Her condition continued to deteriorate without appropriate treatment and she died of complications of her condition which could have easily been avoided with administration of antibiotics.”

Clare encourages residents to make their own submissions to the inquiry, despite previous inquiries failing to improve outcomes for country patients.

“Instead of hospitals looking at what they are doing well, they need to focus on the things they are not doing well, because those failings are costing people their lives, their relationships, their ability to earn an income,” says Clare.
