Following the conviction and sentencing of Cardinal George Pell and subsequent media frenzy, the issue of child sexual abuse has been thrust squarely back into the spotlight. For many survivors of childhood abuse there will be a relief at seeing the world’s third highest ranking catholic brought to account for his actions, and a feeling that now they too, will be believed.
For other survivors, past days and the coming weeks and months will be immensely challenging. The near constant coverage of the Pell case will bring back or aggravate their trauma. With this ongoing coverage, it may be increasingly difficult for survivors to cope.
Speaking to friends, family, a doctor or others who you trust and can confide in may help. To friends and family of survivors, please look out for them. Reach out if you can and you think it will help.
If you are feeling triggered, know that you are not alone.
