"Our team understand the profound effect a brain injury can have on a person’s quality of life. Our core value of ‘always stand up for the little guy’ resonates with me because I empathise and have seen how complex and intimidating the legal system can be.”
Joanna joins our Head Trauma team as a Senior Solicitor, based in our Cairns branch. She works tirelessly to support, empower, and represent everyday Australians to gain access to the justice and compensation they deserve.
She has experience in workers’ compensation, motor vehicle accidents and public liability compensation claims. Joanna has also worked on child protection and family and domestic violence matters.
Joanna began her law degree as a personal challenge whilst working at a personal injury law firm and quickly became fascinated and passionate about medical law. This prompted her to undertake a Master of Health Law. After a 4-year stint at a family and domestic violence practice, she is invigorated to join the challenging area of brain injury claims with Shine.
For Joanna, a career highlight was when she had the opportunity to work as a Legal Advisory Solicitor to the Disability Royal Commission, assisting families in sharing their stories with the Royal Commission in a safe and trauma-informed way.
She has also worked on the following notable cases:
Director of Child Protection Litigation v DHP Anor [2020] QChC 9
Shoalhaven City Council v Humphries [2013] NWSCA 390
Lewis v Kmart Australia Ltd [2016] NSWDC 218
Cooper v Nominal Defendant [2017] NSWDC 3
Joanna completed her Bachelor of Laws with Southern Cross University, graduating in 2012. She went on to achieve a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice at the University of Wollongong and a Master of Health Law at the University of Sydney. She was admitted to Legal Practice in 2013 in NSW, before moving to sunny Queensland in 2016.
