Keeping farm workers safe on quad bikes

For a lot of farmers and those that live on rural properties, quad bikes are an essential piece of equipment used to carry out duties and to help with property maintenance. Quad bikes are the modern-day replacement of horses, and while they provide many advantages over our four-legged friends, research shows that they need to be used with caution and consideration as they are a major cause of death and injury on Australian farms.

Head, neck and back trauma are the most common injuries that occur from quad bike accidents.

The Victorian Government has taken action to reduce quad bike deaths and injuries by investing over $6 million in funding for a rebate scheme. The scheme is designed to either make your current quad bikes safe by purchasing rollover protection devices or funds towards buying a safer alternative vehicle.

New South Wales also offers a rebate scheme for eligible farmers and farm workers.

Unfortunately across Australia, there is not currently a consistent approach to quad bike safety, which is essential to start decreasing the number of incidents and fatalities involving quad bikes.

There are few simple ways to keep farm workers safe while using quad bikes in their day-to-day tasks:

  • Always wear a helmet
  • Never overload a quad bike with extra passengers or cargo
  • Ensure everyone who uses a quad bike has adequate training
  • Maintain and service vehicles regularly
  • Ensure that the quad bike suits the age and size of the passenger. Children should never ride on an adult quad bike
  • Never speed
  • Try to ride on terrain that is even

If used safely, quad bikes are efficient and time-saving farm vehicles, however you should carefully consider what the safest and most appropriate vehicle is for your purposes and the type of farm you are operating on.
