Our thoughts are with the passengers and their families who were involved in the air crash at Chance Bay on Whitsunday Island in the state of Queensland yesterday.
The circumstances of the flight are not fully known at this stage, however, initial reports suggest that it was a routine flight with a water landing to be conducted at Chance Bay on Whitsunday Island. The aircraft was carrying one pilot and eleven passengers (being four men and seven women) who were in their twenties and thirties.
The passengers were injured whilst the pilot was conducting a routine landing onto the waters of Chance Bay until the aircraft encountered rough seas and large waves, which caused the aircraft to pushed ashore and then collide with heavy vegetation at 3.30 pm local time.
This caused severe injuries to the neck and upper body of a female passenger who was airlifted to Mackay Hospital in Queensland with the other ten passengers suffering no injuries.
At this point in time, information is limited about the flight and the cause and effect of the air crash.
Based on preliminary reports, the aircraft involved in the flight may have been a Cessna 208 Caravan, which is an American built aircraft that is widely used and has been involved in a number of fatal air accidents across the world.
A recent air crash involving a Cessna 208 aircraft in the Asia Pacific region occured on 25 November 2013 when a charter-operated Cessna 208B Grand Caravan crashed near Kibeni in Papua New Guinea causing three fatalities and injuries amongst the surviving passengers.
The aircraft, on present indications, is to be retrieved from Chance Bay by the registered operator and owner of the aircraft.
At this stage, the Queensland Police have made an announcement that they will not be investigating the air crash, however, the Australian Transport Safety Bureau has announced that they are reviewing the circumstances of the air crash, and will consider whether a formal investigation will be carried out into the air crash.
