Geelong Grammar: Reparation for abuse survivors

The Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sex Abuse has heard alarming allegations of systemic sexual abuse at Victoria’s prestigious Geelong Grammar.

One victim gave evidence to the commission saying a chaplain had tried to hypnotise students before sexually assaulting them.

Shine Lawyers Partner Roger Singh has represented hundreds of institutional victims of abuse and says the allegations of hypnotism bear a striking resemblance to a number of cases the firm has run for survivors of abuse.

“The stories that I have heard concerning Geelong Grammar are strikingly similar to other schools in Australia who have been brought to account for the harm suffered by former students who endured sexual abuse during their school years,” Mr Singh said.

“We have lead a number of group actions or former students who were subjected to hypnotism and sexually abused at school,” he said.

Mr Singh said that former students who were subjected to abuse during their years at Geelong Grammar could be entitled to bring claims for compensation against the school.

“If in those days the school knew or ought to have known about the abuse and failed to stem it, then in the eyes of the law it could be held negligent and liable to pay compensation to those who have suffered following the brutality they were subjected to.”
