Small Business and Small to Medium Enterprise
Introduction
Small business represents about 97% of all private sector businesses. In Australia there are in excess of one and half million small businesses. A small business is normally a sole proprietor or partnership without employees; a business employing less than 5 people; or businesses that employ no more than 20 people. They are usually characterised by independent ownership and their operations are closely managed by the owner who contributes to operating capital.
Small to medium businesses are those that employ between 20 and 200 people. These businesses are normally found to work from home offices, in strip shops, industrial parks or what is colloquially referred to as “corner stores”.
In Australia, small businesses are generally funded and financed by individuals who invest everything they have in the success of their business as it provides an income for the owner. Therefore, the impact of a natural disaster has a devastating effect. Not only does it damage the workplace from which the business is conducted, impacting on the owner, it also disrupts the income and livelihood of those employed by the business. All insurers offer small business insurance policies and protection.
