What you need to know about your insurance policy
The law recognises that insurance policies may exclude coverage for certain events. However, each insurer has its own terms as to whether it will accept a claim for flood or storm damage. For example, some insurers will explicitly exclude damage caused by riverine/inland flooding but may cover claims arising from flash flooding/storm water/rainwater runoff.
The definitions of an insurance policy are often intentionally ambiguous. You may be in a situation where the amount of loss you’ve suffered is in question by your insurer. You may have even received incorrect or inadequate advice from your insurance company or agent/broker when entering into your policy contract.

QLD Floods Commission of Inquiry
An independent commission of inquiry was setup by Premier Bligh on 17th January, 2011 to examine the flood disaster that affected 70% of the state. Individuals were able to make submissions to the commission addressing issues raised by the floods.

2010 - 2011 Flood Facts & Figures
- 35 people have died as a result of flood-related incidents that have occurred in Queensland since November 30, 2010
- More than 62,000 volunteers registered with Volunteering Queensland to help with the clean up
- Australian floods (Queensland and Victoria) that occurred in January will necessitate a total reconstruction cost of $11.75 billion.
Agricultural loss equates to $2.08 billion.
Forecast decrease in annual Gross Domestic Product will fall from 2.9% to 2.6%.
